In my absence, you were to read the packet given out in class about Andrew Jackson. The questions to complete were given out in a handout. They are also listed below:

The People’s Choice

1. What happened in the 1824 election? Why did some believe that the wrong man became president?
2. According to the leaders of the Democratic Party, who did they represent and what did they stand for?
3. Identify at least 3 groups you can think of who were not really represented by the Democratic party?

Jackson’s Approach to Governing

4. Why did some criticize the people Jackson placed into office?

5. Looking at the cartoon on pg. 193, what do you think were some people’s opinion of Jackson? (make sure you read the caption)

The Nullification Crisis

6. Why did the North support the new tariff, tax, imposed by Congress in 1828 and yet, the South oppose it?


7. What did Jackson do in response to the opposition, and what was South Carolina’s reaction?

8. What was Jackson’s reaction to South Carolina’s threat? How does this relate to what we know about his personality?

10. Why did Jackson hate the National Bank, and what he thought it represented?


11. What was Henry Clay’s motive in pushing a bill through Congress that would extend the life of the National Bank (the bank needed to be renewed by Congress in order to stay open)?
