Whaling Mini-Project

For the Whaling Mini-Project you are tasked with selecting a medium, type of product, to work on to show what you've learned about African Americans in the North and the Whaling industry. Remember, your project needs to be about 80% about African Americans and Whaling, and 20% about African American and their life in the North. DUE: MON 12/5

Here are some links that will help deepen your knowledge about African Americans and Whaling. If you are interested in going above and beyond in terms of the assignment, you should browse some of the websites below. If you use any specific information from any of these websites you should note this on the back of your final product so I know that you did extra research.

http://www.girlonawhaleship.org/index.html -- This website profiles the unique experiences of a young girl from Martha's Vineyard in 1868 as she embarks on a multiyear adventure with her family on a whaling vessel. There is A LOT of great links and interactive features on this website. It might take some time to look around, but it's worth it!

http://americanhistory.si.edu/onthewater/exhibition/3_7.html  -- This website sponsored by The Smithsonian has some an AMAZING collection of photographs of products made from whales, as well as some pretty GREAT Shanty songs that were popular with the crews of the whaling boats.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/films/whaling/ -- This website is from the Into the Deep video we watched. It has some cool additional materials that you might find interesting. you can also watch part of the video if you missed part of it.

http://www.salariya.com/web_books/whaling/index.html -- a VERY entertaining interactive website that puts you right on board the ship, The Essex (remember!!). Might inspire you to create a comic strip, too. Be careful, however!!  You want to make sure you take the lives and experiences of African Americans in the Whaling industry seriously and not minimize their experience by trying to use humor.

http://shanty.rendance.org/lyrics/shanties.php  -- a website that has MANY MANY shanty lyrics from some of the more popular songs written by sailors over the years. Some are better than others, but they give you some insight of the lives of the crew.
