As a reminder, here are the Do's and Don'ts of Social Studies writing.

Social Studies Do’s and Don’ts:
Tips for a Strong Social Studies Essay

DO…
·      make sure that all you write is in your own words - significantly different than the words of your sources.
·      make sure all your writing is in the past tense.
·      make sure writing is in the 3rd person.
·      write in complete sentences - no fragments or run-ons.
·      use transition words (see last pg in packet) to make your arguments extra clear to the reader.
·      make sure you have spelled words correctly- use spell check and the dictionary! (their-there, are-our, hear-here)
·      check your grammar and sentence structure carefully!
·      use dates if you have them to make the time period more clear to the reader.

DON’T…

·      use the 1st /2nd person! That means no “I”, “Me”, “We”, “Us”, or “You”!
·      use informal or vague words such as “good”, “a lot”, “thing” or “stuff”. A formal essay should sound different than the way we talk.
·      assume that the reader has a lot of prior knowledge of the event/issue. Explain the background and prove your point.
·      Ever have a quotation stand alone. You must introduce and analyze your quote.
